The Animal Kingdom and You
What is the purpose of the Animal Kingdom and You?
The STEM field lacks diverse voices due to the lack of scientific resources at underfunded schools. Schools that teach low-income and minority students tend not to offer STEM courses needed for college. These discrepancies in education also prevent elementary school students from learning foundational scientific concepts, and this limits their opportunities in the future. In addition, children who live in poverty or are members of ethnic minorities have fewer opportunities to engage in STEM learning activities than their peers. To advance scientific knowledge, we must hear different perspectives and voices without racial biases. To address this need, this curriculum was made and is targeted toward the second and third grades at underfunded schools in order to promote diverse scientific growth and encourage young minds to get involved with STEM. This resource will be a two-week curriculum about animals and conservation. In order to increase scientific literacy and encourage STEM interests, this curriculum will focus on studying animals.
